What can a hacker achieve in 60 seconds?

Far more than most organisations are comfortable admitting.

In today’s threat landscape, the speed of execution has become one of the most defining characteristics of cybercrime. Attacks that once took days or weeks to develop can now be launched in under a minute, often leveraging automated tools, pre-built scripts, and widely available exploit kits. The result is a dramatic shift in risk, where the window between vulnerability and compromise is rapidly shrinking.

A single minute is enough to scan a network, identify exposed services, and exploit common weaknesses such as weak credentials or unpatched systems. In many cases, attackers can establish initial access, deploy malware, or trigger ransomware payloads before security teams are even aware of suspicious activity. For less mature organisations, that first minute can be the difference between a contained incident and a full-scale breach.

Crucially, this acceleration is not limited to highly sophisticated threat actors. The commoditisation of cybercrime means that even novice attackers can execute impactful operations with minimal expertise. Tools that automate reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and lateral movement are now readily accessible, lowering the barrier to entry and increasing the volume of attacks.

For defenders, this reality demands a fundamental shift in approach. Traditional, perimeter-focused security is no longer sufficient. Instead, organisations must prioritise continuous monitoring, real-time detection, and rapid response capabilities. The ability to identify and contain an attack within those first critical moments is becoming a key differentiator in cyber resilience.

Ultimately, the question is not whether an attack can happen in 60 seconds, but whether your organisation is prepared to respond just as quickly. In a world where attackers operate at machine speed, defence must do the same.
