New international technical specification on the ecodesign of digital services

Digital services are essential to modern life, but their environmental impact across the entire life cycle makes ecodesign a critical priority.

March 30, 2026

Digital services are playing an increasingly important role in today’s economic and social activities. At the same time, they generate environmental impacts throughout their life cycle, making them a significant point of attention. In this context, the international technical specification ISO/IEC TS 20125-1:2026, “Information technology – Digital services ecodesign – Part 1: Ecopractices for life cycle stages”, has recently been published by the technical subcommittee ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 39, “Sustainability, IT and data centres”. Its objective is to provide concrete ecodesign practices to reduce the environmental impact of digital services.

This specification describes the main stages in the life cycle of a digital service, from requirements gathering to design, implementation, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life. For each of these stages, it proposes ecopractices aimed at integrating environmental considerations into the development and operation of digital services.

Beyond practical recommendations, the document aims to establish a common language and shared understanding of the ecodesign of digital services. It thus serves as a tool to support organizations seeking to reduce their environmental impacts.

This technical specification ISO/IEC TS 20125-1:2026, along with many other standardization documents, can be consulted free of charge at one of the reading stations available in Luxembourg or purchased via the ILNAS e-shop.

For more information on standardization activities in the field of sustainability of information technologies, it is possible to consult the work of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 39 subcommittee on the dedicated webpage.

ILNAS also offers national stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to the work of technical committees of recognized standardization bodies (ISO, IEC, CEN, and CENELEC). Free registration allows interested individuals to actively participate in the development of standards.
