Luxembourg Space Agency and WeSTEM+ collaborates for a panel on AI and Machine Learning for NewSpace Europe 2024.

Luxembourg Space Week is almost here, ready to launch a universe of ideas and innovation. As part of this stellar event, WeSTEM+ (Women Excel in STEM) collaborated with LSA to feature a panel highlighting the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the evolving space industry.
Taking place on the 3rd of December, at 17:10pm, the discussion, titled “#Switch2Space: Why Does Space Need AI and ML? How Do You Transition to Space?” will offer audiences a glimpse into how AI and machine learning are transforming everyday life and enabling the world’s leading companies to optimize their operations. This session also offers professionals, including women and underrepresented groups, the opportunity to explore whether transitioning to the dynamic and rapidly growing space industry could be the next step in their careers.
The panel is composed of some of the brilliant minds in the field and Luxembourg. Moderated by Evangelia Markidou the European AI office where she leads strategic initiatives on AI and generative AI across sectors. Her strategic vision and coaching expertise will guide an engaging discussion on innovation and collaboration in space.
Prof. Dr. Djamila Aouada, Acting Vice Director at the University of Luxembourg’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT), is a trailblazer in computer vision research. As the founder and head of the CVI2 Research Group, she leads a team of 30 researchers, advancing cutting-edge innovations in computer vision, imaging, and machine intelligence.
The Director of the Luxembourg Tech School, Anush Manukyan, is a visionary leader with a doctorate in robotics and artificial intelligence. She is committed to equipping the next generation of tech leaders, inspiring and educating them to reach their full potential.
Currently leading the Data Driven Transformation at SES, Maikel Vercaigne is a pro at making data accessible and impactful. His insights will show how AI bridges the gap between terrestrial and space innovation.
With 2 decades of experience of applying AI driven methodologies into real world products, Nicolas Maillot, the Chief Architect Data, AI & Edge Computing of Thales Alenia Space is leading the development of edge AI capabilities for future Earth observation environmental and defense programs.
As the panel brings together diverse perspectives from leaders in AI, machine learning, and space innovation, it underscores the importance of broadening participation in the space industry showcasing how AI and machine learning can open doors to new opportunities in this rapidly growing field.
The NewSpace Europe conference, held annually, provides an excellent opportunity to network with key players in the space industry while showcasing the sector’s broader contributions to various terrestrial industries.
