Interview with Mark Thiele, Executive Vice President of Data Center Technology at SUPERNAP and speaker during the Internet Days organize by Lu-Cix. He will talk about the impact of IoT on Data Center Design and Operations on 18th november afternoon.

  • IoT will massively increase the data it means rethinking data storage ?

IoT is very likely that IoT will have a huge impact on the volume of data created every day. If I were to predict, I would say by 2022 IoT will be contributing as much data as all other current IT and consumer solutions are creating today. This increase combined with a general increase in the use of IT will mean a rethinking of how storage is architected and especially how it’s allocated and managed.

  • What do you recommends to face the IoT? More capacity? More Security?

Capacity is an obvious need, but capacity alone is unlikely to meet the demand. Virtualized storage combined with new storage technologies (not traditional disk) will be necessary. Security is a whole other issue and is likely an even bigger risk/opportunity space than storage. Imagine increasing the entry points to networks by 10X and not having well defined standards or protocols for the security of each of those new devices or sensors.

  • The SUPERNAP’s data centers are among the best in the world. Do we have to rethink their power to analyze data from these IoT?

We believe the SUPERNAPs are the best designed data centers in the world and the Uptime Institute would agree. The capabilities of our design for high density, massive scale, and 100% guaranteed availability are combined with a strong ecosystem of partners and some of the best and most cost effective connectivity in the world. All these factors make the SUPERNAP design very well positioned for the future, with or without IoT.

  • Capacity, security and power are already challenge today, what will change with the IoT?

Capacity is a factor IT has been struggling with for years. Either we waste the capacity we have through inefficiency or we can’t keep up with demand. While I believe technology will struggle to keep the availability of simple capacity enhancement options cost effective, I do believe options will be available. How that capacity is managed, secured, and connected is likely to be an even bigger issue. In the end, if we can’t provide security for the consumer, IoT will become a monster that no one will want, yet no one can avoid.
