SUMMARY:Workshop – Technical Standardization in Space and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, the risks associated to climate change are a priority for most socio-economic actors; thus\, the implementation of solutions to mitigate these risks is currently one of the greatest challenges facing stakeholders. Similarly to other fields of technology\, the space domain holds two opposing roles in this matter: on one hand\, some of its activities are considered as means to efficiently address climate change (notably with Earth observation tools)\, but on the other hand\, they can also be considered as a source of pollution for terrestrial and space environments\, caused by space debris\, for instance. \nConversely to other fields\, the space domain has a particularity which lies in its history\, making the related climatic change concerns even more challenging: since the beginning\, and only until recently\, launches and space missions have been initiated by a mere handful of actors\, for specific and limited purposes. However\, currently space is opening its doors to an increasing number of private entities\, generating the need for a common understanding and good practices to enable safe and harmonized operations\, especially when these could yield an impact on the environment and on the feasibility of space activities. Yet\, as of today\, requirements related to sustainability in space remain for the most part specific to each stakeholder. \nIn this context and in the frame of the National Policy on Aerospace Technical Standardization (2021-2025)\, the Luxembourgish Standards Body (OLN) is organizing a Workshop on « Technical Standardization in Space and Sustainability »\, on Tuesday\, July 2nd\, 2024\, from 9:00am to 2:00pm\, on its premises\, in Belval. \nThis event will highlight standards development related to sustainability for space activities\, while depicting the national landscape in regard to space resources. Moreover\, this event will be an opportunity to present the updated version of the National Standards Analysis “Aerospace Sector” and to share the point of view of the Luxembourgish space stakeholders during a question-and-answer session. \n  \nAGENDA\nNote : The event will be presented in English. \n  \n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:25\n  \nWelcome and registration of participants \n \n\n\n09:25 – 09:35\n  \nWelcome words by ILNAS \nDr. Jean-Philippe HUMBERT – Deputy Director – ILNAS \n \n\n\n09:35 – 09:45\n  \nPresentation of the Space Strategy 2023-2027 \nDr. Muriel HOOGHE – Lead Space Safety – Luxembourg Space Agency \n \n\n\n  \nSession 1: National and international standardization development \n \n\n\n09:45 – 10:10\n  \nNational Standardization Policy for the Space Sector and legal framework of standardization \nMr. Nicolas DOMENJOUD – Project officer – ILNAS/OLN \n \n\n\n10:10 – 10:40\n  \nStandardization for sustainability in space \nPresentation of national space standardization developments \nDr. Lucas CICERO – Project officer – ILNAS/OLN \n \n\n\n10:40 – 11:00\n  \nCoffee break \n \n\n\n  \nSession 2: Space resources – an overview of the current state\, from legal and standards perspectives \n \n\n\n11:00 – 11:15\n  \nSpace resource legislation in Luxembourg \nPr.
